EDIFACT: Electronic Data Interchange For Administration Commerce and Transport. The international standard used for Electronic Data Interchange is the UN/EDIFACT standard maintained and co-ordinated by the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (CEFACT).
CEFACT's mission statement is aiming to improve the ability of business, trade and administrative organizations, from developed, developing and transitional economies, to exchange products and relevant services effectively - and so contribute to the growth of global commerce.
EDIFACT standard usage predominates today worldwide. Also governments and government agencies now recommend EDIFACT messages to achieve electronic administration and e-Government.
In France, the Taxation authority (DGI) adopted EDIFACT from 1997 onwards, consistent with the circular letter of the Prime Minister.
Messages BALANC (Trial balance), CHACCO (Chart of accounts), ENTREC (Accounting entries), INFENT (annual statements or tax return or management file) and LEDGER (Ledger) were developed in this standard language. They make it possible to import (or to export) accounting files from any information system to another, e.g. recapture of an opening balance either in case of accounting software package change or operating system migration.
